Chapter 10
"She doesn't have the sense God gave a flea," Val chided while they rode along the track from the Hall to the new village.
"I would never go so far as to say that," Blase said sharply. "However, this last bit of teasing has gone too far." He supposed he was overreacting to the situation. It was unreasonable to blame Hyacinthe Dancy for his fall from the oak tree, thus splitting his pantaloons and making himself a laughing stock for the villagers. That the premier rake of London should be placed in such a position was appalling, however. And she was the one who had silently urged him to fetch the blasted kite.
She had called him a garden rake. While he had laughed with her, it had served to remind him that Miss Dancy possessed a lamentable sense of humor.
And that cat she had saddled him with! The dratted animal had taken over his bedroom not to mention his bed, and acted as though Blase ought to cater to it. When Smithson had served the cat kippers, they had been on a china plate, if you please. No ordinary crockery for that animal. True, the little fellow did have a winning way about him and had proven to be a good mouser. But still, a man didn't have a cat for a pet; he had a sturdy, sensible dog, for pity's sake.
"What do you intend to do about her?" Val queried. 173

Blase knew full well that his friend expected him to perform some devilishly nasty bit of retribution. Blase couldn't think of a thing he wished to do to Hyacinthe Dancy that was along such lines. Not after holding her in his arms. And then there was that memorable kiss. She had never mentioned it, but he found it impossible to forget. But he would. He must. It would be absurd to become more deeply involved with that redheaded tease.
"What I intend to do is forge ahead with my plans. I told Wayland to hire more stone masons to work on the church. We also need a few more carpenters to speed up completion of the houses. The sooner the new village is completed, the sooner Miss Dancy will give up and go away."
"And you wish her to be out of your life?" Val gave Blase a look that clearly told how he doubted this. Fortunately he said nothing more, so Blase didn't have to defend himself one way or the other.
"I want to find those emeralds first. I cannot believe she has taken them. Why would she give me the bracelet in that case?" he demanded.
"To put you off her trail," Val said, obviously trying to sound like a detective. "You see, if she can make you believe that by handing you the bracelet she's innocent, she can keep the rest of them. You must admit, she would look rather luscious arrayed in those emeralds on that delicate white skin with her striking eyes.
